19 As I have ntioned the Northn I will show by an cident drawn fro the reign of your grandfather what slight estiation they hold faith and baptis Jt as after the death of the warrior Kg David, the neighbourg peoples, who his strong hand had subdued, for a long ti paid their tribute to his peaceful son Soloon: even so the terrible race of the Northn still loyally paid to Lewis the tribute which through terror they had paid to his father, the ost augt Eperor Charles Once the ost religio Eperor Lewis took pity on their envoys, and asked the if they would be willg to receive the Christian religion; and, when they answered that always and everywhere and everythg they were ready to obey hi, he ordered the to be baptised the na of Hi, of who the ost learned Augte says:“If there were no Trity, the Truth would never have said:‘Go and teach all peoples, baptisg the the na of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost’” The nobles of the pace adopted the alost as children, and each received fro the eperor’s chaber a white robe and fro their sponsors a full Frankish attire, of stly robes and ars and other derations

This was often done and fro year to year they ca creasg nubers, not for the sake of Christ but for earthly advantage They ade haste to e, not as envoys any longer but as loyal vassals, on Easter Eve to put theselves at the disposal of the eperor; and it happened that on a certa oasion they ca to the nuber of fifty The eperor asked the whether they wished to be baptised, and when they had nfessed he bade the forthwith be sprkled with holy water As len garnts were not ready sufficient nubers he ordered shirts to be cut up and sewn together to the fashion of wraps One of these was forthwith cpped upon the shoulders of one of the elder n; and when he had looked all over it for a ute, he nceived fierce anger his d, and said to the eperor:“I have gone through this washg bess here enty tis already, and I have been dressed excellent clothes of perfect whiteness; but a sack like this is ore fit for clodhoppers than for soldiers If I were not afraid of y nakedness, for you have taken away y own clothes and have given no new ones, I would soon leave your wrap and your Christ as well”
